Tropic of Cancer- George on Seinfeld & his overdue library book
62Tropic of Cancer Review
I had high expectations for the book Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller. After all, this was the overdue library book in an episode of Seinfeld that involved atomic wedgies and George having to pay an enormous fine for a library book decades overdue. In addition, I was reading Parade magazine, the lovely insert in the weekly paper, and this was included on the reading recommendations as one of the most influential books ever. I was also reading a memoir by Erica Jong where she talked about spending time with an elderly Henry Miller. Erica Jong thought that he contributed to writing tremendously because in his time, his writing was scandalous, and this opened the door for the writers of today to have freedom of speech. With so many recommendations I made sure to check this out at the library. Now I am glad that I did not purchase the book.
I could not get past the first chapter and forgot even the small amount I read. I didn't think it was scandalous, just boring. I've read books written in the 1800s and early 1900s, so it is not the timeframe, and I've read books written about scandalous subjects, so I don't think it's the subject matter. I think it's simply the author and the writing style are not my cup of tea.
